Tool: Goal Setting Tool

When parents get access to respite or habilitation, we often have to create goals for our children. But to be honest, when is the last time you broke down a goal and started a plan to tackle that goal?

This goal-setting tool was designed to make goal-setting easy.

Very often, when we start with an important goal, it seems impossible. That the goal is so huge we will never tackle it, so we don’t even begin.

One of my favorite quotes of all time is.

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

Click on the link and fill out the PDF in number order.

1. North Star: Your North Star is not the goal itself. Your North Star is what you hope that goal will help you achieve. For example, whenever we set goals for my son, our NorthStar is always independence. When I set goals for myself, most of them revolve around giving and contributing to my community. Figure out your North Star and make sure all your goals help you achieve it.
2. Go to the bottom of the PDF and write down your end goal.
3. Back to the top, write down your starting position and be honest. Where are you when it comes to your goal, and how far do you have to go? Write that down.
4. Think about that significant goal; what is the first small goal you have to achieve to get to that end goal?
5. Think about that significant goal; what is the second small goal you have to achieve to get to that end goal?
6. Think about that significant goal; what is the third small goal you have to achieve to get to that end goal?
7. What steps/tasks are required to get the first small goal accomplished?
8. What steps/tasks are required to get the second small goal accomplished?
9. What steps/tasks are required to get the third small goal accomplished?

By the time you are done, boxes 7, 8, and 9 will become your tasks list.

You can use this tool for anything. It can help you figure out how to structure respite and habilitation goals or help you achieve other goals like starting your own business.

Enjoy
